  1. There is probably enough information here, on POWERKIT's opening screen, and 
  2. in QWIK-REF.DOC, for experienced users to load it and test it. For more 
  3. detail, (and for info on how to set up pop-up help menus until you learn 
  4. POWERKIT's commands) TYPE the user's manual, POWERKIT.DOC, to printer or 
  5. screen. 
  6.  
  7. Tyros should TYPE and read the user's manual before operating POWERKIT.  To
  8. do this, make sure your printer is on, the print head is near the top of a
  9. sheet of paper, the file POWERKIT.DOC is on drive "A", say, then enter: 
  10.  
  11. TYPE A:POWERKIT.DOC >PRN <press ENTER>
  12.  
  13. On some machines, the ENTER key is labeled RETURN, on others a downward and 
  14. leftward pointing, right-angled ARROW. Leave out >PRN when TYPING to the 
  15. display.  There are twelve pages in the manual. 
  16.  
  17. INSTALLATION: To operate POWERKIT, the file POWERKIT.OBJ must be on your boot 
  18. disk, and the line:
  19.  
  20.  DEVICE=POWERKIT.OBJ (instructions to POWERKIT may go here) 
  21.  
  22. must be in the CONFIG.SYS file on your boot disk.  Ideally, this line should 
  23. be the FIRST line in your CONFIG.SYS file.  Your boot disk is the floppy disk 
  24. you place in disk drive "A" when you turn the machine on, unless you have a 
  25. hard disk drive, in which case your boot disk is the hard disk.  If you do not 
  26. have a file named CONFIG.SYS on your boot disk, transfer the CONFIG.SYS file 
  27. that comes with this package to your boot disk at the same time you transfer 
  28. POWERKIT.OBJ.  To transfer these files, boot up, put the disk containing 
  29. POWERKIT.OBJ and CONFIG.SYS in floppy disk drive "B", then type: 
  30.  
  31.  COPY B:POWERKIT.OBJ <press ENTER>
  32.  COPY B:CONFIG.SYS <press ENTER> 
  33.  
  34. If your machine has only one floppy disk drive and no hard disk drive, drive 
  35. "B" is also drive "A", and the above procedure will involve swapping your boot 
  36. disk with the POWERKIT.OBJ disk, and back again. Reboot your computer, 
  37. POWERKIT will let you know if it is loaded.
  38.  
  39. POWERKIT version 1.5 differs from version 1.1 in the following ways:
  40.  
  41. * POWERKIT's screen blanker no longer ignores EGA cards.
  42. * Machine cannot be "unlocked" without the password.
  43. * POWERKIT's "beeper" has been replaced by the system "beeper".
  44. * Screen blanking is disabled while AutoPilot is engaged.
  45. * AutoZoom: Pressing any key while holding down keypad "5" causes
  46.   the key to repeat at the rate you have selected.
  47. * AutoPilot's buffer has been increased to 16 keystrokes.
  48.  
  49. Two new switches, to be set from the DEVICE=POWERKIT.OBJ line in 
  50. CONFIG.SYS, or from the command line of POWERKIT.COM, have been added.
  51.  
  52. * /Xn changes the rate at which the repeat reaches top speed.
  53.   n = 0 -- Repeat begins at full speed
  54.   n = 1 -- Repeat reaches top speed quickly
  55.   n = 2 -- (Default) Repeat same as in version 1.1
  56.  
  57. * /Y0 disables the Scroll Lock key handler in POWERKIT.
  58.  
  59. POWERKIT version 1.6 has the following changes:
  60.  
  61. * POWERKIT now boots up "instantly", the "pause" has been replaced by a
  62.   switch that tells POWERKIT the clock tick rate of "semi-compatible" machines.
  63.  
  64. * Two new "run-on curb" methods have been added.
  65. * POWERKIT now has "1-2-3" style pop-up menus to guide the new user.
  66.   The pop-up menus are generated by the public domain program SlashBar (c)
  67.   1987, Ziff-Davis.  SlashBar is described in PC Magazine, vol. 6 # 10, by
  68.   its author, R.L. Hummel, and can be downloaded from PC Magazine's BBS
  69.   (212) 696-0360, (415) 598-9100, and many other places.  The interface to 
  70.   SlashBar can be detached from POWERKIT when the user has become familiar 
  71.   with POWERKIT's KEYPAD 5 commands, or when the several thousand bytes used 
  72.   by SlashBar and the interface are needed to allow a large application 
  73.   program to load.

  75. * Several control switches have been added.
  76.  
  77. POWERKIT version 1.71 has the following changes:
  78.  
  79. * Machine can be locked with a password on bootup ("kid-proofs" your 
  80.   machine from kids of all ages).
  81. * The PrtSc key handler in POWERKIT has been removed (use KEYPAD 5, P).
  82. * AutoPilot now can go faster. It also used to "miss" a keystroke occasionally.
  83. * POWERKIT.COM will recognize if it (or POWERKIT.OBJ) is already resident.
  84. * POWERKIT recognizes more EGA adaptors, and a bug was fixed that prevented
  85.   EGA cards from turning back on after blanking.
  86. * Cursor is placed near the bottom of the opening screen (reset it with /Cn).
  87. * POWERKIT's "hot" key and AutoZoom's "hot" key have been combined.  A 
  88.   version that has the old "hot" key will still be available on request.
  89. * Bug fixed in Plan "B" run-on curb.
  90. * /Z1 replaces POWERKIT's soft "beep" with the much louder "system beep".
  91. * /M0 causes POWERKIT not to change the floppy disk motor shut-off parameter.
  92. * /Tn activates blanking of HERCULES brand display adaptors.
  93.   n = 1 -- Checks for Hercules adaptor.  If present, activates blanking.
  94.   n = 2 -- Uses Hercules blanking technique without checking.

  96. NOTICE TO USERS WHOSE CURSORS VANISH:
  97.  
  98. After POWERKIT installs itself, it sets the cursor at the bottom of the 
  99. screen.  Sometimes, device drivers installed after POWERKIT unintentionally 
  100. make your cursor disappear, not to return again, until you enter the clear 
  101. screen command (CLS, some versions of DOS 2.XX don't have CLS), or a program 
  102. you load resets the display page.  To avoid this annoyance (or to eliminate 
  103. the "cursor" message), use /Cn (see below or POWERKIT.DOC) to set the cursor 
  104. some distance above the bottom of the screen. 
  105.  
  106. * /Cn, n = 0 to 25 (1 = TOP), sets the cursor at row "n" after POWERKIT.OBJ is 
  107. installed. /C0 clears the screen and sets the cursor at the top of the screen.

  109. POWERKIT v1.72 -- fixed bug in Hercules blanking -- added a NO REPEAT option to 
  110. AutoPilot -- small change in run-on curb plans A and B -- eliminated plan C
  111.  
  112. POWERKIT v1.73 -- fixed problem PK had with 101 key enhanced keyboards --
  113. run-on plans A and B can be active at the same time (if CAPS=ON when plan is 
  114. set) -- changed the function of the "/R" switch -- eliminated "/O" switch,

  120. ADDED AT RELEASE DATE, 2/2/88: On 101 key keyboards, the function keys F11 and 
  121. F12 won't work as HOT keys.  This should be fixed by the time you decide to 
  122. register POWERKIT.
